Patching VMware vCenter Server Appliance 6.0 U1 to 6.0 Update 1b

I've upgraded my lab from vSphere 5.5 to vSphere 6.0 last year and then patched to Update 1 few months ago. Since Update 1b has been released, I've decided to patch my lab today. The first component we need to patch always the vCenter server, in this case I'm using vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA).

In vCenter 6.0, patching a vcenter server appliance became a straightforward and easy task.

Step 1:

Go to VMware Product Patches page to look for vCenter Server patches.

Step 2:

Select Product and Version and then download the full patch iso.

Step 3:

Mount the ISO to vCenter Server Appliance via vSphere Web Client or C# Client

Step 4:

SSH to VCSA using your favorite ssh client and make sure you are in shell mode, otherwise, type the following command to enter shell mode:
appliancesh

Step 5:

Type the following command to initiate the patching. Use --acceptEulas to skip the long Eulas, you might want to spend time to give it a read if you are not in hurry. Then just sit back and wait for the update process to complete.
software-packages install --iso --acceptEulas

Step 6:

Finally, reboot your server and you may proceed to upgrade your vSphere hosts.
shutdown reboot -r "Patched"
Thank you!
